The Miracle of Being Awake ปาฎิหาริย์แห่งการตื่นอยู่เสมอ

การดำรงอยู่ของชีวิต เป็นความจริงที่ลึกลับปาฏิหาริย์ หลายคนอาจคิดว่าการเดินบนน้ำหรือบนอากาศ หรือการรอดชีวิตจากอุบัติเหตุเป็นเรื่องปาฏิหาริย์ แต่ท่านติช นัท ฮันห์ กล่าวว่า ปาฏิหาริย์ที่แท้จริง มิใช่การเดินบนน้ำหรือบนอากาศ หากแต่เป็นการเดินบนพื้นโลกอยู่กับความอัศจรรย์ทุกๆวัน เพราะการมีสติ เป็นสิ่งอัศจรรย์ตรงที่ช่วยให้เราเป็นนายของตนเอง และรักษาใจตนเองอยู่ได้ในทุกๆสถานการณ์
การมีสติไม่ได้มีแค่ตอนนั่งสมาธิ เท่านั้น แต่มีในทุกอาการ เช่น ในการล้างจาน ถ้าเรามีสติ ก็ควรล้างจานอย่างเดียว ซึ่งหมายความว่า ขณะล้างจานเราก็ต้องรู้ตัวทั่วพร้อมว่าเรากำลังล้างจาน ดังตอนหนึ่งของหนังสือว่า “ ครูกำลังยืนตรงนั้น และล้างถ้วยชามเหล่านั้นอยู่ เป็นความจริงที่ถือว่าเป็นความความอัศจรรย์ ครูเป็นตัวของตัวเองอย่างสมบูรณ์ ตามลมหายใจตลอดเวลา รู้ตัวพร้อมถึงปัจจุบันกาลของตนเอง รู้พร้อมทั้งมโนกรรม และวจีกรรมต่างๆ ไม่มีทางที่จะทำให้ใจของครูแกว่งไปแกว่งมาเหมือนขวดแกว่งบนยอดคลื่น ความสำนึกของครูไม่มีอะไรจะมาทำให้ไหวหวั่นได้ ดังฟองน้ำบนผิวคลื่นที่ซัดกระแทกกับหน้าผา “
ในกิจวัตรชีวิตประจำวัน เช่น การกิน การดื่ม การทำงาน ล้วนเป็นโอกาสแห่งการเจริญสติได้ ดังความตอนหนึ่งของหนังสือว่า “ เมื่อเดินอยู่ ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเราเดินอยู่ เมื่อยืนอยู่ ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเรายืนอยู่ เมื่อนั่งอยู่ ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเรานั่งอยู่ เมื่อนอนอยู่ ย่อมรู้ชัดว่าเรานอนอยู่ เราตั้งกายไว้ด้วยอาการใดๆ ย่อมรู้ถึงกายนั้น ด้วยอาการอย่างนั้นๆ ด้วยอาการนี้ที่เราเป็นผู้อยู่ด้วย สติมั่นคงเห็นกายในกาย “
แต่การมีสติรู้เท่าทันอาการต่างๆของกายนั้นยัง ไม่พอ เราต้องมีสติรู้พร้อมถึงลมหายใจแต่ละครั้ง การเคลื่อนไหวแต่ละหน ความคิดทุกความคิด และความรู้สึกทุกความรู้สึก นั่นคือ มีสติรู้ทั่วพร้อมถึงทุกสิ่งที่เนื่องกับตัวเรา การนั่งสมาธิเพื่อให้ เกิดสมาธิเพื่อให้เกิดสติ เป็นสิ่งยากที่คนทำงานทุกคนจะปฏิบัติได้ แต่สติสามารถทำให้เกิดในขณะทำงานได้ โดยท่านติช นัท ฮันห์ ได้แนะนำคือ การพุ่งความสนใจทั้งหมดไปที่งาน การตื่นตัวและพร้อมเสมอที่จะเผชิญกับสถานการณ์ที่จะเกิดขึ้นอย่างสามารถและ มีไหวพริบ นี่คือความมีสติโดยแท้ ไม่มีเหตุผลใดที่การมีสติจะต่างไปจากพุ่งความสนใจทั้งหมดไปที่งานของตน ตื่นตัวอยู่เสมอ และพร้อมจะตัดสินใจอย่างดีที่สุด ในขณะของการปรึกษาหารือ การแก้ปัญหาและการจัดการกับปัญหาต่างๆ ที่เกิดขึ้น เราจะต้องมีหัวใจที่สงบและควบคุมตัวเองได้อย่างดี การงานนั้นๆ จึงจะได้รับผลเป็นที่พอใจ ถ้าเราอยู่ในภาวะที่ควบคุมตัวเองไม่ได้ ปล่อยให้ความไม่อดกลั้นและโทสะเข้าครอบงำงานขอบเราก็จะหมดความหมายไร้คุณค่า ทันที
ดังนั้น การมีสติคือการมีชีวิต ช่วยให้เราปลอดจากความขี้หลง ขี้ลืม และความคิดฟุ้งซ่านต่างๆ สติช่วยให้การมีชีวิตทุกขณะจิตเป็นไปได้ ไม่ควรปล่อยตนเองให้หลงไปในความคิดฟุ้งซ่านและสิ่งแวดล้อมรอบตัว จงเรียนรู้วิธีฝึกลมหายใจ เพื่อจะได้คอยควบคุมจิตใจและร่างกายของเรา ฝึกสติ พัฒนาสมาธิและปัญญา ในพระสูตรต่างๆ พระพุทธองค์มักจะทรงสอนให้ใช้ลมหายใจบำเพ็ญสติเสมอ มีพระสูตรที่ตรัสถึงการใช้ลมหายใจเพื่อฝึกสติเจริญสมาธิ โดยเฉพาะพระสูตรหนึ่ง คือ อานาปานสติสูตร ซึ่งท่านเคือง ต่ง ห่อย ได้แปลพระสูตรนี้ไว้ว่า อานาปานะ คือ ลมหายใจ สติ คือ ความรู้สึกตัวทั่ว จึงแปลว่า การคุ้มกันจิต ดังนั้น อานาปานสติสูตร คือ พระสูตรว่าด้วยการใช้ลมหายใจในการเจริญสติ หรือคุ้มกันรักษาจิต
การหายใจ เป็นเครื่องมือตามธรรมชาติที่มีประสิทธิภาพสูงสุด ในการป้องกันความคิดฟุ้งซ่าน ลมหายใจเป็นสะพานเชื่อมระหว่างชีวิตและจิตสำนึก ทำให้ร่างกายและความคิดเป็นเอกภาพกัน หากเกิดความฟุ้งกระจายไป ควรใช้ลมหายใจ ในการรวมจิตเข้ามาอีกครั้งหนึ่ง เราไม่ควรปล่อยตนเองให้ลุ่มหลงไปในความคิดที่ฟุ้งซ่านและสิ่งแวดล้อมรอบตัว การมีสติเพื่อให้ชีวิตเป็นหนึ่ง ของจักรวาล มีปรากฏการณ์ต่างๆมากมายดำรงอยู่ในชีวิตของเรา และตัวเราเองก็อยู่ในปรากฏการณ์ต่างๆ เรา คือ ชีวิต และชีวิตนั้นปราศจากขอบเขต บางทีเราอาจจะพูดได้ว่าเราจะมีชีวิตอยู่จริง ไม่ใช่อยู่อย่างตายซาก ก็ต่อเมื่ออยู่อย่างเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชีวิตโลก ดังนั้นร่วมทุกข์ร่วมสุขกับเพื่อนมนุษย์ร่วมโลก ความทุกข์ของคนอื่นก็คือความทุกข์ของเรา ความสุขของคนอื่นคือความสุขของเรา สามัญลักษณะของจักรวาลประกอบด้วย อนิจจังทุกขัง อนัตตา ความสำเร็จล้มเหลวของชีวิตไม่สามารถที่จะทำร้ายเราอีกต่อไป
การบำเพ็ญ สมาธิเพื่อเข้าใจในเรื่องความเป็นเหตุปัจจัยของกันและกัน ต้องปฏิบัติอยู่เสมอ และเพื่อเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในชีวิตการงานของเราประจำวันด้วย ทำให้เรามองเห็นคนที่ยืนอยู่ตรงหน้าเราเป็นตัวเราเอง และเห็นว่าเราเองคือคนคนนั้นด้วย เราจะต้องสามารถมองเห็นขบวนการก่อกำเนิดซึ่งกันและกัน และเป็นเหตุปัจจัยซึ่งกันและกันของสรรพสิ่งเหตุการณ์ ทั้งที่เกิดขึ้นแล้วและจะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตและให้มองสรรพสิ่งชีวิตด้วยสาย ตาแห่งความรักและความเมตตา ซึ่งฝึกมองสรรพสิ่งมีชีวิต ด้วยสายตาของความรักและ
ความเมตตา คือ การฝึกสมาธิที่เรียกว่า เมตตานุสติ การเจริญเมตตานุสตินั้น จะต้องทำทั้งในขณะชั่วโมงของการนั่งสมาธิ และในทุกขณะที่ทำงาน ไม่ว่าจะไปที่ไหน นั่งที่ไหน เราจะต้องดำรงชีวิตที่เป็นของเราเอง การงานเป็นเพียงส่วนหนึ่งของชีวิตเท่านั้น และงานคือชีวิตก็ต่อเมื่อเราทำงานนั้นด้วยสติเท่านั้น และชีวิตของเราเกี่ยวพันกับชีวิตบุคคลรอบๆเราด้วย หากเรารู้วิธีปกปักรักษา และระวังจิตใจและหฤทัยของเราเอง จะช่วยให้เพื่อมนุษย์รอบข้างเรา รู้จักการมีชีวิตอยู่อย่างมีสติ ภายในครอบครัวหนึ่ง หากมีคนใดคนหนึ่งในครอบครัวฝึกการเจริญสติ คนอื่นๆในครอบครัวจะสามารถเจริญสติได้ด้วนการกระทำที่มีสติของคนคนนั้น จะเตือนคนทุกคนในครอบครัวให้ระลึกถึงความมีสติได้ และคนที่ทำงานเพื่อ สังคม ซึ่งก็คือครอบครัวๆหนึ่ง เราไม่ต้องหวังว่าคนรอบตัวเราจะไม่ทำดีที่สุด ให้ห่วงตัวเองเพื่อทำตนเองให้มีคุณประโยชน์ก็เพียงพอ เพราะถ้าตัวเราทำดีที่สุด ก็จะช่วยเตือนเพื่อนๆรอบข้างให้ทำดีที่สุดด้วย
เวลา ที่เราอยู่ในสมาธินั้น ทั้งร่างกายและจิตใจของเราสามารถที่จะอยู่ในสภาวะสงบและผ่อนคลายเต็มที่ ซึ่งสภาวะแบบนี้ต่างกันโดยสิ้นเชิงจากสภาวะจิตที่อยู่ในอาการครึ่งหลับครึ่ง ตื่นขณะที่เราเคลิ้มๆ เพราะนั่นเป็นเหมือนเรานั่งอยู่ในถ้ำมืดมากกว่าการนั่งสมาธิ ซึ่งทำให้เรามีสติสมบูรณ์นั้น เราไม่เพียงแต่ได้พักผ่อนและมีความสุขเท่านั้น หากยังทำให้จิตของเราว่องไวและเบิกบาน ตื่นอยู่เสมอ การภาวนาไม่ใช่การ หนีโลก หากแต่เป็นการเผชิญกับความเป็นจริงของโลกด้วยจิตที่แจ่มใสเยือกเย็นต่างหาก ผู้บำเพ็ญสมาธิ เจริญสติทั้งหลายควรจะตื่นอยู่เสมอ เพราะถ้าหากไม่ตื่นอยู่เสมอ จิตก็จะตกอยู่ในภาวะฟุ้งซ่านและขี้หลงขี้ลืมไป เหมือนคนขับรถ ซึ่งถ้าไม่ตื่นอยู่เสมอก็ประสบอุบัติเหตุถึงชีวิตได้ง่ายๆ
ดังนั้น ควรจะตื่นเหมือนคนที่กำลังเดินอยู่บนไม้คานในที่สูง หากก้าวพลาดเพียงก้าวเดียวก็หมายถึงความตาย จึงควรจะเป็นเหมือนอัศวินในยุคศักดินาผู้เดินมือเปล่าฝ่าเข้าไปในดงดาบ เป็นเหมือนราชสีห์ที่ก้าวไปข้างหน้าช้าๆ ทีละก้าวๆ อย่างสุภาพ แต่มั่นคงองอาจ อยู่กับความไม่ประมาทชนิดนี้เท่านั้น จึงจะมีโอกาสเข้าถึงภาวะของการเป็นผู้รู้ ผู้ตื่น ผู้เบิกบาน อันสมบูรณ์
จงจำไว้ว่ามีเวลาที่สำคัญ ที่สุดเวลาเดียว คือ ปัจจุบัน ช่วงขณะปัจจุบันเท่านั้น ที่เป็นเวลาที่เรา
เป็นเจ้าของอย่างแท้จริง บุคคล ที่สำคัญที่สุดก็คือ คนที่เรากำลังติดต่ออยู่ คนที่อยู่ต่อหน้าเรา เพราะเราไม่รู้ว่าอนาคตเราจะมีโอกาสได้ติดต่อกับใครอีกหรือไม่และภารกิจที่สำคัญที่สุดก็คือ การทำให้คนที่เราอยู่กับเราขณะนั้นๆ มีความสุข เพราะนั่นเป็นภารกิจอย่างเดียวของชีวิตเรา จะทำอย่างไร จึงจะสามารถอยู่กับปัจจุบัน อยู่กับคนรอบข้างเรา ช่วยลดความทุกข์และเพิ่มความสุขแห่งชีวิตเหล่านั้น คำตอบก็คือ เราจะต้องมีสติ

These meditations help us water the seeds of joy and happiness in our store consciousness. Joy and happiness are the food of a Zen monk. Before eating, we say, “May all beings be nourished by the joy of meditation.”

What is the nature of this joy? How can we touch true joy every moment of our lives? How can we live in a way that brings a smile, the eyes of love, and happiness to everyone we encounter? Use your talent to find ways to bring happiness to yourself and others—the happiness that arises from meditation and not from the pursuit of fruitless pleasure. Meditative joy has the capacity to nourish our mindfulness, understanding, and love. Try to live in a way that encourages deep happiness in yourself and others. “I vow to bring joy to one person in the morning and to help relieve the suffering of one person in the afternoon.” Ask yourself, “Who can I make smile this morning?” This is the act of creating happiness.

The Dandelion Has My Smile

If a child smiles, if an adult smiles, that is very important. If in our daily lives we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. If we really know how to live, what better way to start the day than with a smile? Our smile affirms our awareness and determination to live in peace and joy. The source of a true smile is an awakened mind.

How can you remember to smile when you wake up? You might hang a reminder--such as a branch, a leaf, a painting, or some inspiring words--in your window or from the ceiling above your bed, so that you notice it when you wake up. Once you develop the practice of smiling, you may not need a reminder. You will smile as soon as you hear a bird singing or see the sunlight streaming through the window. Smiling helps you approach the day with gentleness and understanding.

When I see someone smile, I know immediately that he or she is dwelling in awareness. This half-smile, how many artists have labored to bring it to the lips of countless statues and paintings? I am sure the same smile must have been on the faces of the sculptors and painters as they worked. Can you imagine an angry painter giving birth to such a smile? Mona Lisa's smile is light, just a hint of a smile. Yet even a smile like that is enough to relax all the muscles in our face, to banish all worries and fatigue. A tiny bud of a smile on our lips nourishes awareness and calms us miraculously. It returns to us the peace we thought we had lost.

Our smile will bring happiness to us and to those around us. Even if we spend a lot of money on gifts for everyone in our family, nothing we buy could give them as much happiness as the gift of our awareness, our smile. And this precious gift costs nothing. At the end of a retreat in California, a friend wrote this poem:

ติช นัท ฮันห์ กับมิติใหม่ของพุทธศาสนา

นอกจากองค์ทะไล ลามะ แล้ว ท่านติช นัท ฮันห์ เป็นภิกษุอีกรูปหนึ่งที่นิตยสารไทม์เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ ยกย่องให้เป็น “hero” หรือผู้มีผลงานอันโดดเด่นและเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้แก่คนทั้งโลก หนังสือหลายเล่มของท่านติดอันดับหนังสือขายดีทั้งในยุโรปและอเมริกา ทุกหนแห่งที่ท่านไปบรรยายจะมีผู้ฟังแน่นขนัดแม้ต้องเสียค่าผ่านประตูก็ตาม ยิ่งที่หมู่บ้านพลัมอันเป็นสำนักของท่านในประเทศฝรั่งเศส ทุกปีจะมีผู้เข้าร่วมปฏิบัติธรรมประจำฤดูร้อนนับพันคนในคราวเดียวกัน คนเหล่านี้มาจากแทบทุกทวีปทั่วโลก ไม่เว้นแม้แต่แอฟริกาและอเมริกาใต้ 

คำสอนของท่านนำความสงบเย็นและหว่านความรักลงไปในจิตใจของผู้คนนับล้าน แต่น้อยคนจะตระหนักว่าความสงบเย็นและความรักที่ออกมาจากหัวใจของท่านนั้น มิได้ก่อเกิดจากการนั่งภาวนาในป่าอันสงบสงัดเท่านั้น หากยังกลั่นออกมาจากความทุกข์ยากแสนสาหัสท่ามกลางเพลิงสงครามอันยาวนาน 

สงครามเวียดนามได้สังหารญาติมิตรศิษย์หาและเพื่อนร่วมชาติของท่านเป็นจำนวนมาก แต่กลับทำให้ท่านมั่นคงยิ่งขึ้นในเมตตากรุณาแม้กระทั่งกับผู้ปลิดชีวิตบุคคลที่ท่านรัก ท่ามกลางการตอบโต้ด้วยความอาฆาตพยาบาท ท่านเรียกร้องการให้อภัย ขณะเดียวกันก็อุทิศตนเพื่อนำสันติภาพกลับคืนมา 

ท่านเคยกล่าวถึงประเทศเวียดนามของท่านว่า เปรียบเสมือน “ดอกบัวกลางทะเลเพลิง” ชีวิตของท่านจะว่าไปแล้วไม่ได้ผิดไปจากอุปมาดังกล่าวเลย

หากจีนไม่รุกรานทิเบต โลกก็คงไม่รู้จัก องค์ทะไลลามะ ในทำนองเดียวกันหากรัฐบาลเวียดนามใต้ไม่ปิดประตูผลักไสให้ท่านกลายเป็นผู้ลี้ภัย โลกก็คงไม่มีโอกาสดื่มด่ำสัมผัสธรรมของ ท่านนัท ฮันห์ อย่างแพร่หลายเช่นทุกวันนี้ เมื่อท่านไม่อาจเข้าประเทศเวียดนามได้หลังจากการไปรณรงค์เรียกร้องสันติภาพที่สหรัฐอเมริกา อเมริกาและยุโรปจึงเปรียบเสมือนบ้านของท่านตลอด 39 ปีที่ผ่านมา หนังสือและคำสอนที่สำคัญของท่านส่วนใหญ่เกิดขึ้นในช่วงนี้ ยิ่งท่านมาตั้งสำนักที่หมู่บ้านพลัม ประเทศฝรั่งเศส สังฆะของท่านก็หยั่งรากลึกและเติบใหญ่จนกลายเป็นพลังที่สำคัญในทางศาสนธรรมและสันติภาพ ขณะเดียวกันก็สร้างมิติใหม่ให้แก่พระพุทธศาสนาทั้งในระดับโลกและสำหรับเวียดนามเอง 

ท่านนัท ฮันห์ เป็นหนึ่งในบุคคลผู้ริเริ่มนำพุทธศาสนาออกมาสัมพันธ์กับโลกสมัยใหม่อย่างมีพลัง ในยามที่บ้านเมืองเกิดศึกสงคราม ท่านเห็นว่าจุดยืนของพุทธศาสนามิได้อยู่ที่การสนับสนุนฝ่ายใดฝ่ายหนึ่งที่จับอาวุธห้ำหั่นกัน หากอยู่ที่การเสนอทางออกอย่างสันติ โดยมีความเมตตาต่อทั้งสองฝ่าย แม้นั่นจะหมายถึงการถูกเข้าใจผิดจากทุกฝ่ายก็ตาม และในขณะที่ผู้คนกำลังเดือดร้อนจากภัยสงครามและความยากจน ชาวพุทธไม่ควรเอาแต่นั่งภาวนาหรือแผ่เมตตาอยู่ในมุ้ง หากควรออกไปช่วยเหลือคนเหล่านั้น โดยพร้อมร่วมทุกข์ร่วมสุขกับเขา แต่สิ่งที่ต้องทำควบคู่กับปฏิบัติการทางสังคม ก็คือการเจริญสมาธิภาวนา เพื่อให้จิตบังเกิดความสงบ มีสติ เปี่ยมด้วยกรุณาและมีปัญญากระจ่างแจ้ง ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้เกิดทั้งประโยชน์ท่านและประโยชน์ตนอย่างแท้จริง 

นอกจากการนำพุทธศาสนามาสัมพันธ์กับสังคมแล้ว ท่านนัท ฮันห์ ยังเห็นว่า พุทธศาสนามิอาจแยกจากชีวิตได้ การปฏิบัติธรรมมิได้หมายถึงการปลีกตัวออกจากกิจวัตรประจำวัน หากควรผสานให้กลมกลืนกับทุกอิริยาบถ ไม่ว่าการกิน การดื่ม การทำงาน ล้วนเป็นโอกาสแห่งการเจริญสมาธิภาวนาทั้งสิ้น พุทธศาสนาที่สัมพันธ์กับชีวิตและสังคมอย่างแนบแน่นดังกล่าว ท่านนัท ฮันห์ เรียกว่า Engaged Buddhism ซึ่งเป็นแนวคิดที่ได้รับการยอมรับอย่างแพร่หลายในปัจจุบัน

เสน่ห์แห่งคำสอนของท่านนัท ฮันห์ อยู่ที่การประยุกต์ธรรมให้สมสมัย โดยอิงอาศัยหลักไตรสิกขา กล่าวคือ ศีล สมาธิ ปัญญา แทนที่ศีลจะจำกัดอยู่แค่ศีล 5 ในขอบเขตแคบๆ อย่างที่เราคุ้นเคย ท่านได้ขยายศีล 5 ให้มีความหมายกว้างขึ้นเพื่อให้เหมาะกับสังคมสมัยใหม่ที่มีความซับซ้อนแยบยลสูงจนผู้คนสามารถเบียดเบียนกันได้แม้จะไม่เห็นตัวกัน เช่น ศีลข้อที่ 1 อันได้แก่ปาณาติบาต ท่านได้ขยายความว่าหมายถึง “การตั้งจิตมั่นที่จะไม่ทำลายชีวิต ไม่ปล่อยให้ผู้อื่นทำลายชีวิต รวมทั้งจะไม่ส่งเสริมการทำลายชีวิตใดๆ ในโลกนี้ โดยทั้งความคิดและในทางการปฏิบัติ” ในแง่นี้การสนับสนุนนโยบายฆ่าตัดตอนผู้ค้ายาเสพติด หรือการบริโภคที่ส่งเสริมอุตสาหกรรมทารุณสัตว์ ก็เท่ากับผิดศีลข้อที่ 1 ด้วย 

ในด้านสมาธิ ท่านเห็นว่าหัวใจสำคัญของสมาธิภาวนา คือ การเจริญสติ เพราะสตินำไปสู่ความตื่นรู้ และความตื่นรู้นั้นมิได้จำกัดอยู่แค่การรู้กายและใจของตนเท่านั้น หากยังรู้ความเป็นไปของสิ่งรอบตัว รวมทั้งรู้ถึงความทุกข์ยากของผู้คนด้วย แต่ขณะเดียวกันจะต้องไม่ปล่อยให้ความทุกข์ของผู้อื่นท่วมท้นจิต จนตนเองกลายเป็นผู้ทุกข์ไปด้วยอีกคน 

เราจะต้องรักษาจิตให้ผ่องใสอยู่เสมอ โดยมีสติเข้าไปรับรู้ความเศร้าโศก ความโกรธ ความเกลียด และแปรให้เป็นความสงบและความรัก การตื่นอยู่เสมอด้วยสตินั้นเป็นปาฏิหาริย์ในตัวเอง ดังหนังสือเรื่อง ปาฏิหาริย์แห่งการตื่นอยู่เสมอ ของท่านเป็นคู่มือนำทางให้แก่เราได้เป็นอย่างดี โดยที่ต้องไม่ลืมว่าหนังสือเล่มนี้ท่านเขียนในขณะที่สงครามเวียดนามกำลังมาถึงจุดแตกหัก แม้ท่านจะห่วงใยกับสถานการณ์ดังกล่าวเพียงใด แต่ท่านก็สงบนิ่งพอที่จะเขียนหนังสืออันมีคุณค่าลุ่มลึกทางจิตใจได้ 

ท่านนัท ฮันห์ ยังเป็นผู้ฉลาดในการนำพาให้เราเห็นโลกด้วยปัญญา กล่าวคือไปพ้นจากความหลงแห่งทวิภาวะที่มองสิ่งต่างๆ แยกออกเป็นขั้วๆ ท่านชี้ให้เห็นว่า สิ่งที่มองเห็นเป็นขั้วนั้นแท้จริงเป็นอีกด้านของเหรียญเดียวกัน ไม่ว่า ได้-เสีย มา-ไป เกิด-ตาย เรา-ผู้อื่น ขยะ-ดอกไม้ เหยื่อ-อาชญากร ทั้งหมดนี้ไม่ได้แยกจากกัน คนที่เป็นอาชญากรนั้นก็เคยเป็นเหยื่อมาก่อน เช่นเดียวกับขยะซึ่งในอดีตเคยเป็นดอกไม้ และในอนาคตก็จะกลายเป็นดอกไม้อีก ในโลกแห่งความเป็นจริง ทุกอย่างล้วนสัมพันธ์กันและเป็นเหตุปัจจัยให้แก่กันและกัน (ดังท่านเรียกว่า “เป็นดั่งกันและกัน” หรือ interbeing)

เมฆกับกระดาษ เกี่ยวข้องกันอย่างแยกไม่ออก ไม่มีเมฆ ไม่มีฝน ก็ไม่มีต้นไม้ และไม่มีกระดาษ ด้วยเหตุนี้ท่านจึงย้ำให้เรามองกระดาษจนเห็นก้อนเมฆ ดวงอาทิตย์ และคนตัดไม้ กล่าวอีกนัยหนึ่งกระดาษนั้นไม่มีตัวตนของมันเอง หากเกิดขึ้นมาจากสิ่งที่ไม่ใช่กระดาษ เช่นเดียวกับร่างกายของเราล้วนเกิดขึ้นจากธาตุหรือสารต่างๆ ที่ไม่ใช่ตัวเรา เช่น คาร์บอน แคลเซียม เหล็ก ฯลฯ ด้วยคำสอนง่ายๆ ที่ฝึกให้เรามองสิ่งต่างๆ อย่างเพ่งพินิจ ท่านได้พาให้เราเข้าใจความจริงอันลึกซึ้งอันได้แก่อนัตตา คือความไม่มีตัวตน 

คุณูปการสำคัญอีกประการหนึ่งของท่านนัท ฮันห์ ที่ควรกล่าวย้ำในที่นี้ก็คือ การตั้งสังฆะที่สมสมัย ท่านตระหนักดีว่าพุทธศาสนาจะดำรงอยู่ได้ จำต้องมีสังฆะที่เข้มแข็ง แต่แทนที่สังฆะจะหมายถึงผู้บวชที่ถือเพศพรหมจรรย์เท่านั้น ท่านได้ขยายสังฆะให้คลุมไปถึงอุบาสกและอุบาสิกา ขณะเดียวกันในฝ่ายผู้บวช ก็มิได้มีแต่ภิกษุเท่านั้น หากยังมีภิกษุณีอีกด้วย โดยมีสิกขาบทที่ปรับปรุงให้เหมาะกับสังคมสมัยใหม่อย่างน่าสนใจ โดยเฉพาะการทวนกระแสบริโภคนิยม ซึ่งกำลังเป็นตัวกัดกร่อนบั่นทอนชีวิตจิตใจของนักบวชและผู้ใฝ่ธรรมทั่วโลก ขณะเดียวกันท่านยังได้คิดค้นพิธีกรรมใหม่ๆ ที่สื่อธรรมอย่างน่าประทับใจ ควบคู่ไปกับการสร้างสามัคคีธรรมในหมู่สังฆะเพื่อเป็นชุมชนกัลยาณมิตรอย่างแท้จริง 

นิมิตดีก็คือในเดือนพฤษภาคมนี้ ท่านนัท ฮันห์ และสังฆะของท่านจะมาเยือนประเทศไทย (หลังจากที่เคยมาครั้งล่าสุดเมื่อ 30 ปีที่แล้ว) นอกจากการบรรยายแล้ว ท่านยังจะนำการปฏิบัติเพื่อความตื่นรู้ในปัจจุบันอันประเสริฐสุด นี้เป็นโอกาสดีที่หาได้ยากสำหรับชาวไทย (และผู้สนใจจากประเทศเพื่อนบ้าน) ที่จะได้ฟังธรรมจากท่าน ซึ่งเป็นการผสานมหายาน (โดยเฉพาะเซน) กับเถรวาท ได้อย่างลุ่มลึกและสื่อตรงกับคนสมัยใหม่ได้อย่างถึงแก่น 

ด้วยวัย 80 ปีและกิจนิมนต์ที่ได้รับจากทั่วโลก ไม่ง่ายเลยที่ท่านจะกลับมาเยือนเมืองไทยอีกหลังเดือนพฤษภาคมนี้ ผู้สนใจโปรดสอบถามรายละเอียดการบรรยายและการปฏิบัติธรรมได้จากมหาวิทยาลัยมหาจุฬาลงกรณราชวิทยาลัย ซึ่งเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดงานนี้เพื่อเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเทศกาลวิสาขบูชาแห่งโลก

I have been looking for you, World Honored One,
since I was a little child.
With my first breath, I heard your call,
and began to look for you, Blessed One.
I've walked so many perilous paths,
confronted so many dangers,
endured despair, fear, hopes, and memories.
I've trekked to the farthest regions, immense and wild,
sailed the vast oceans,
traversed the highest summits, lost among the clouds.
I've lain dead, utterly alone,
on the sands of ancient deserts.
I've held in my heart so many tears of stone.

Blessed One, I've dreamed of drinking dewdrops
that sparkle with the light of far-off galaxies.
I've left footprints on celestial mountains
and screamed from the depths of Avici Hell, exhausted, crazed with despair
because I was so hungry, so thirsty.
For millions of lifetimes,
I've longed to see you,
but didn't know where to look.
Yet, I've always felt your presence with a mysterious certainty.

I know that for thousands of lifetimes,
you and I have been one,
and the distance between us is only a flash of thought.
Just yesterday while walking alone,
I saw the old path strewn with Autumn leaves,
and the brilliant moon, hanging over the gate,
suddenly appeared like the image of an old friend.

All night, the rain of compassion continued to fall,
while lightning flashed through my window
and a great storm arose,
as if Earth and Sky were in battle.

The moon returned,

The moon of freedom has returned to me,

and in each moment that followed,
I saw that nothing had gone.
There is nothing that should be restored.
Every flower, every stone, and every leaf recognize me.
Wherever I turn, I see you smiling
the smile of no-birth and no-death.
The smile I received while looking at the mirror of the moon.
I see you sitting there, solid as Mount Meru,
calm as my own breath,
sitting as though no raging fire storm ever occurred,
sitting in complete peace and freedom.
At last I have found you, Blessed One,
and I have found myself.
There I sit.

The deep blue sky,
the snow-capped mountains painted against the horizon,
and the shining red sun sing with joy.
You, Blessed One, are my first love.
The love that is always present, always pure, and freshly new.
And I shall never need a love that will be called “last.”
You are the source of well-being flowing through numberless troubled lives,
the water from your spiritual stream always pure, as it was in the beginning.
You are the source of peace,

Since the moon is full tonight,
let us call upon the stars in prayer.
The power of concentration,

and enters the meditation on Mahakaruna.

Compassion springs from the heart,

The poisonous snake drinks
a drop of this nectar
from the tip of a blade of grass,
and the poison on its tongue vanishes.

The wondrous action of the healing water--

A child now holds the snake in her innocent arms.

Leaves are still green in the ancient garden.
The shimmering sunlight smiles on the snow,
and the sacred spring still flows toward the East.

the healing water is the same.

Tonight all weapons
fall at our feet
and turn to dust.

One flower,

millions of little flowers

These meditations help us water the seeds of joy and happiness in our store consciousness. Joy and happiness are the food of a Zen monk. Before eating, we say, “May all beings be nourished by the joy of meditation.”

What is the nature of this joy? How can we touch true joy every moment of our lives? How can we live in a way that brings a smile, the eyes of love, and happiness to everyone we encounter? Use your talent to find ways to bring happiness to yourself and others—the happiness that arises from meditation and not from the pursuit of fruitless pleasure. Meditative joy has the capacity to nourish our mindfulness, understanding, and love. Try to live in a way that encourages deep happiness in yourself and others. “I vow to bring joy to one person in the morning and to help relieve the suffering of one person in the afternoon.” Ask yourself, “Who can I make smile this morning?” This is the act of creating happiness.
